This week, my class from Panmure Bridge School went on a trip to the Auckland War Memorial Museum to wrap up our learning about volcanoes. During our visit, we explored the World War I section, the Hall of Memories, and the dinosaur exhibit.
When we first arrived, we gathered on a big circular mat near a side entrance. A museum guide spoke to a different class before we were led into the Hall of Memories. It’s a large, cream-colored hall with the names of all the fallen ANZAC soldiers who didn’t come home. The most interesting thing I saw was a huge book in a glass case, which looked to be about 16 cm thick. I learned that someone turns a page in the book every day.
After our morning tea break, we went to the World War I section. This part of the museum displayed many guns and other artifacts from the war. Our teacher, Miss Anderson, told us that her husband had actually used one of the guns on display, a 25-Pounder. For one of our activities, I drew a picture of an interesting artifact in a book that each group was given at the beginning of the trip. After that, we went back to the mat to eat our lunch.
For the last part of our trip, we explored the dinosaur exhibit and attended a special class about volcanoes. In the dinosaur section, my group and I had to draw a dinosaur and its habitat. My friend and I also saw a Moa, a now-extinct bird, and some huge eggs. The volcano class had a red light and a realistic miniature volcano. The guide showed us different rocks and gave us a challenge to pick which items would be useful if a volcanic eruption were to happen.
Today we made a DLO about the Polyneisian Panthers and the Dawn raids and our question was, should the Government of today (2021) have apologised for the dawn raids of yesterday (1970s)? The dawn raids of the 1970s involves several considerations. The prime minister was apologizing on the behalf of the government in 2021. An apology could acknowledge the pain that they have caused over the past years towards the Pacific community. The pakeha didn’t treat the Polynesian Panthers fairly throughout their entire lives, creating generational trauma for the youngs one to pass on when they are older. Our opinion was that the government of today (2021) should apologise for the past actions of the dawn raids from yesterday (1970) to insure no other public outcries occur and so no other families hold any grudges / anger. The dawn raids back then was unacceptable and caused generational trauma.
Way back in the days, there were dinosaurs in the world, and they all went extinct due to a meteor shower. Now there are people who are called Palaeontologistsand what they do is study fossils and see how history was in the dinosaur age. We created a DLO explaining what a fossil is and the two types of fossils, which are Body Fossil and Trace fossil. A Trace Fossil is a Trace the dinosaur left behind for example, Footprints, nests, and feeding traces. A Body Fossil is a preserved part of an dinosaurs body like, head, legs and arms. I found this fun to do because I also got to learn so much about both fossils.
Before we take part in our own dinosaur dig LS2 were challenged to capture the story behind Mary Anning, a pioneering fossil hunter and paleontologist during the early 19th century.
This week, we got to write a short story that is 50 words long. In the story, it talk about paleontology. It’s the kind of job that when people look at really old bones and stuff from long ago. Paleontologists are like detectives who dig up fossils. Plus, we needed to tell why fossils matter and how yesterday’s discoveries help us today for example the fossils that are found are important because they help us learn about the world long ago, and what we find out helps us now.
Our challenge was to research the impact of a specific volcanic eruption in Aotearoa. We could choose from Mt Tarawera or Whakaari. Me and my partner chose Whakaari, one thing w
We have been exploring cinquain poems. A cinquain poem. A cinquain poem has 5 lines. Each line has a different purpose. Line 1 is a noun which is a name. Line 2 has 2 adjectives that describe the noun. Line 3 has 3 verbs that end in ‘ing’ and describe the actions. Line 4 is a noun phrase which is a group of words (not a sentence) that go together to describe the noun. Line 5 is a synonym which is a word with a similar meaning to the noun.
