Auckland War Memorial Museum

This week, my class from Panmure Bridge School went on a trip to the Auckland War Memorial Museum to wrap up our learning about volcanoes. During our visit, we explored the World War I section, the Hall of Memories, and the dinosaur exhibit.

When we first arrived, we gathered on a big circular mat near a side entrance. A museum guide spoke to a different class before we were led into the Hall of Memories. It’s a large, cream-colored hall with the names of all the fallen ANZAC soldiers who didn’t come home. The most interesting thing I saw was a huge book in a glass case, which looked to be about 16 cm thick. I learned that someone turns a page in the book every day.

After our morning tea break, we went to the World War I section. This part of the museum displayed many guns and other artifacts from the war. Our teacher, Miss Anderson, told us that her husband had actually used one of the guns on display, a 25-Pounder. For one of our activities, I drew a picture of an interesting artifact in a book that each group was given at the beginning of the trip. After that, we went back to the mat to eat our lunch.

For the last part of our trip, we explored the dinosaur exhibit and attended a special class about volcanoes. In the dinosaur section, my group and I had to draw a dinosaur and its habitat. My friend and I also saw a Moa, a now-extinct bird, and some huge eggs. The volcano class had a red light and a realistic miniature volcano. The guide showed us different rocks and gave us a challenge to pick which items would be useful if a volcanic eruption were to happen.

Trace and Body Fossils DLO

Way back in the days, there were dinosaurs in the world, and they all went extinct due to a meteor shower. Now there are people who are called Palaeontologistsand what they do is study fossils and see how history was in the dinosaur age. We created a DLO explaining what a fossil is and the two types of fossils, which are Body Fossil and Trace fossil. A Trace Fossil is a Trace the dinosaur left behind for example,  Footprints, nests, and feeding traces. A Body Fossil is a preserved part of an dinosaurs body like, head, legs and arms. I found this fun to do because I also got to learn so much about both fossils.

Mary Anning

Before we take part in our own dinosaur dig LS2 were challenged to capture the story behind Mary Anning, a pioneering fossil hunter and paleontologist during the early 19th century. Something I learnt was that Mary Anning was fighting breast cancer along finding fossils to sell or keep. But in the end she had died at 47 in 1947.

Impact of Volcanoes

Our challenge was to research the impact of a specific volcanic eruption in Aotearoa. We could choose from Mt Tarawera or Whakaari. Me and my partner chose Whakaari, one thing we found out was 70 percent of its bottom is fully submerged deep underneath the sea. I found this task really fun because we got to learn more about how lethal and terminal the Whakaari volcano is.

Volcano Poem

  • We have been exploring cinquain poems. A cinquain poem. A cinquain poem has 5 lines. Each line has a different purpose. Line 1 is a noun which is a name. Line 2 has 2 adjectives that describe the noun. Line 3 has 3 verbs that end in ‘ing’ and describe the actions. Line 4 is a noun phrase which is a group of words (not a sentence) that go together to describe the noun. Line 5 is a synonym which is a word with a similar meaning to the noun.
  • We used our poem to show our understanding of volcanoes.
  • Something I found interesting about this was we could make powerful description to make our poems sound better.

Volcano Animation

This term we had a challenge to make a animation of how a volcano erupts, if you are wondering what a volcano is, is that it is a landform or a vent of the earths crust. There are 4 layers in the earth Mantle, Outer core, Inner core and the Earths crust, the features that the volcano has is the Crater, Main vent, Secondary vent and the Magma chamber where it stores all the lava and magma. How it explodes is that there are these objects under the volcano which makes it erupt and they are called tectonic plates. They first collide together and pressure builds up and then soon reaches the crater and explodes some of the lava comes out of the secondary vents which makes it go everywhere with dioxides going up into the air which makes the air not very good to breathe in.

Time Traveler’s Podcast ft Samuel Marsden

For Literacy we have been doing Inquiry and what had to make was a podcast script to do a podcast, we had to write questions that we might have asked Reverend Samuel Marsden when he went across the Tamaki River. This was a great activity because we got to take turns  being Samuel Marsden and we also got to Express ourselves while recording. One thing I think I learned today is that you get to bond with more people when you’re with them, and that’s what makes it more joyful and fun.

Tamaki River Hikoi

Today our teachers gave us a challenge in to making a collage when walked past the Tamaki River and went to Pt England Reserve to eat our Morning tea and play Sport games over there with our friends. Our teacher asked us before the walk, What would you think Samuel Marsden would see when he arrived to the Tamaki River in New Zealand? What this shows is a sequential order, which is a time order so what we had to was find photos and a collage and put them in a time order. This shows us crossing the road, walking and looking all around us with the scenery Tamaki River across us. Then it shows we took a class photo and carried on walking until we got to Pt England Reserve where we started eating and had a little break looking across the water and we started feeling hot but I went to go play on the park until we walked back to school and made a podcast about a interview with Samuel Marsden with one person being Samuel Marsden and three people as the Host, what I chose to be was Samuel Marsden.

Evolution of the NZ Flag

Today LS2 had a challenge to show the evolution of the New Zealands flags on a presentation, it shows what years they were invented and explains about how they were made. What I  really found interesting is that these flags expresses a story because the way it looks and sounds like and also these flags were made by British people. What I also found interesting is that in 1844 the British colonies put the flag as the Union Jack but Ngapuhi Hone Heke came and chopped it down because did not accept it. The part I think I need to work on is to make more slides to have more work and information done.

Expectations

At the start of the 2025 learning year LS2 has a discussion about how we could make the most of our learning time. To be able to do this we expect to bond and communicate so we gain each other’s trust which is called a trust system for LS2.
